DATE SQUARES

Nice either un-iced or spread with lemon icing.

125g butter or marg
2 Tab golden syrup
1/4 tsp BP
1/4 c each of walnut pieces, sugar
1c flour
1/2 c chopped dates
1 egg
few drops of vanilla
pinch salt

Cream b&s well, add gs & unbeaten egg. Mix well, sift in flour, BP & salt.
Blend, then add dates, walnuts & vanilla.
Spread in a lightly greased swiss roll tin and bake in  a slow oven for 30 mins.
Cut into squares while still hot and leave to cool.
